Derived from the Hebrew personal name Dawid, meaning 'beloved' or 'darling'. The biblical King David made this one of the most influential names in the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions; in France it spread through both Christian veneration of Saint David and the long-established Sephardic Jewish community who settled in southern and southwestern France.
