Cheng

The Cheng surname (程) derives from Cheng Bo Xiu, a high official of the Shang Dynasty who administered the Cheng region. After the Zhou conquest of Shang, his descendants retained the surname Cheng. The character 程 implies rules and measured journeys. The clan is concentrated in Henan, Anhui, Hubei, and Sichuan and has produced many influential scholars.
