The Huang surname traces its origins to the ancient state of Huang, founded by descendants of the legendary Yellow Emperor (Huangdi). The character 黃 represents the yellow colour associated with the earth element and imperial authority in Chinese culture. When the state of Huang was conquered by Chu around 648 BC, its people adopted Huang as a surname. The clan has been especially prominent in Fujian and Guangdong provinces.
