Mishra derives from the Sanskrit 'miśra', meaning 'mixed' or 'honorable', often interpreted as 'one of mixed or distinguished learning'. It is a Brahmin surname prevalent in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Mishras traditionally worked as priests, Sanskrit scholars, and teachers and are counted among the most respected Brahmin lineages of North India.
