Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'O Murchadha', meaning 'descendant of Murchadh', where 'Murchadh' derives from 'muir' (sea) and 'cadh' (warrior) — thus 'sea warrior'. The original Murchadh was a tenth-century Leinster king, and the family spread from County Wexford and County Tyrone across Ireland during the medieval period. Murphy has been the most common surname in Ireland for centuries and is now the single most frequent Irish surname worldwide.
