The Wu surname originates from the ancient state of Wu, a powerful kingdom in the Yangtze River Delta during the Spring and Autumn period (c. 560–473 BC). The clan traces its roots to Taibo and Zhongyong, uncles of King Wen of Zhou, who voluntarily ceded the Zhou throne and founded the Wu kingdom. The surname is especially prevalent in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces.
