Origen e historia

Desai derives from the Gujarati/Marathi 'deshāī', a compound of 'desha' (country/region) and 'āī' (mother/elder), roughly meaning 'elder of the land'. It was a hereditary revenue-collection title during the Maratha and Mughal administrations, primarily held by Patidar and Leva Patel families in Gujarat and Brahmin families in Goa and Maharashtra. The surname carries connotations of local administrative authority and land ownership.
