Goto is another Fujiwara 'to' surname, with 'Go' (後) meaning 'rear' or 'behind', suggesting a branch of the Fujiwara who lived behind or behind-the-scenes of the main lineage. The Goto clan became skilled metalworkers and sword fittings (kodogu) craftsmen during the Muromachi and Edo periods, with the Goto school of metalwork renowned for exquisite tsuba (sword guards). The name is common across Japan, especially in Kyushu.
