Origen e historia
Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'Mac Carthaigh', meaning 'son of Carthach', where 'Carthach' derives from the Irish 'carthach' meaning 'loving' or 'beloved'. The McCarthys were the ruling dynasty of the kingdom of Desmond in southwest Munster, covering most of modern County Cork and County Kerry. After the Anglo-Norman conquest, they were gradually pushed westward and became lords of Muskerry, with their seat at Blarney Castle near Cork city — the same Blarney Castle that houses the famous Blarney Stone, associated with the gift of eloquence.
