Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Axel', the Scandinavian form of the Hebrew name Absalom — from 'Avshalom', meaning 'my father is peace'. Axel entered Sweden during the medieval period through German and Danish influence and became closely associated with the Swedish aristocracy; the powerful Bielke and Oxenstierna families, who included members named Axel, made the name prestigious.
