Origine et histoire

Topographic surname derived from Grantham in Lincolnshire, England — Old English 'granta' (gravel, sand) + 'ham' (homestead) — meaning 'gravel homestead'. William de Graham arrived in Scotland in the twelfth century with King David I and was granted lands in the Lothians that became the Graham heartland. Clan Graham spread across Stirlingshire, Perthshire, and the Borders, producing Scotland's most celebrated cavalry commander in John Graham of Claverhouse, 'Bonnie Dundee', killed at the Battle of Killiecrankie (1689). The Marquessate of Graham (Dukes of Montrose) made the clan one of the greatest noble houses in Scotland.
