Origine et histoire

Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Hans', itself a Low German and Scandinavian contraction of Johannes, from the Hebrew Yohanan, meaning 'God is gracious'. Hans was one of the most popular given names in Denmark from the medieval period onward, especially in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein where Low German influence was strong. Hansen is also extremely common in Norway and among Danish-American emigrant communities. Approximately 215,000 Danes bear the name.
