The term referred to any small piece of land surrounded by water or marshy ground, and dozens of Danish place names incorporate Holm as an element. As a surname it was adopted by families living on or near such terrain. Holm is also common in Sweden and Norway, reflecting the shared Norse topographic vocabulary.
