Khan is a Turco-Mongol title meaning 'ruler' or 'nobleman', adopted as a surname across Muslim communities of South Asia. In India, it is prevalent among Pashtun, Mughal-descended, and various Muslim communities in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and across the Deccan. The title was brought to the subcontinent through the Ghaznavid, Ghurid, and Mughal invasions and came to denote military commanders and nobility under the Mughal Empire.
