Mehta

Origine et histoire

Mehta derives from the Sanskrit 'mahittā', meaning 'great one' or 'chief accountant'. It was a hereditary administrative title used by Brahmin and Bania communities who served as revenue officers and accountants in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra under Mughal, Maratha, and Rajput rulers. The Mehta community has historically been prominent in commerce, law, and public administration.
