Origine et histoire

In Ireland, Moore is most commonly an anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'O Mordha', meaning 'descendant of Mordha', where 'mordha' means 'great', 'stately', or 'majestic'. The O'Moores were the ruling dynasty of the kingdom of Laois in Leinster and among the most persistent opponents of the Tudor conquest of Ireland, fighting continuously against the Laois-Offaly plantation in the sixteenth century. The surname also arrived through English and Welsh settlers, where it could indicate someone who lived near a moor or heathland, from Old English 'mor'.
