Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Morten', the Danish form of Martin, from the Latin Martinus, derived from Mars, the Roman god of war. Morten became popular in Scandinavia partly through the influence of Saint Martin of Tours and was reinforced by the Martinmas feast (November 11), which is called Mortensdag in Denmark and traditionally celebrated with roast duck.
