Origine et histoire

Derived from 'niemi', the Finnish word for 'peninsula', 'cape', or 'headland' projecting into a lake or sea, plus the diminutive suffix '-nen'. Finland's deeply indented coastlines and lakeshores created countless natural peninsulas that served as settlement sites and landmarks, making 'niemi' one of the most common elements in Finnish place names and family names alike. The name is widespread across Finland but shows a slight concentration along the lake districts of Savo and Tampere regions, where peninsular land formations are ubiquitous.
