Occupational surname derived from Old English 'stigweard' — 'stig' (house, hall) + 'weard' (guardian, keeper) — denoting a steward or estate manager. The Scots form 'Stewart' (later anglicised to 'Stuart' by the French-influenced royal house) derives from Walter fitz Alan, the first hereditary High Steward of Scotland in the twelfth century, whose descendants became the royal House of Stewart. The clan spread across Scotland from Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, giving the name its distinctive concentration in the west-central Lowlands.
