Origine et histoire
Topographic farm name derived from Old Norse 'strand' meaning 'shore', 'beach', or 'bank', denoting a family whose farm was situated on or very near a shoreline — whether a sea coast, fjord bank, lake shore, or riverbank. Given Norway's extraordinary coastline length of over 83,000 kilometres including fjords and islands, Strand farms were common throughout the country, and the name is spread relatively evenly across Norwegian coastal counties. Strand is also a surname in Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands with the identical topographic meaning.
