Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Nils', the Scandinavian form of Nicholas, from the Greek 'Nikolaos' composed of 'nike' (victory) and 'laos' (people) — thus 'victory of the people'. Saint Nicholas, the fourth-century Bishop of Myra, was one of the most popular saints in medieval northern Europe, and his name spread throughout Scandinavia. Nilsen is the characteristically Norwegian spelling, distinguished from the Swedish Nielsen; both derive from the same short form Nils and share identical etymological roots.
