Korean Names
한국 이름
Korean names follow a structured system deeply rooted in Confucian tradition and Chinese character semantics. A Korean name typically consists of a one-syllable family name (seong, 성) followed by a two-syllable given name (ireum, 이름), yielding a total of three syllables. The family name comes first, reflecting the Confucian emphasis on lineage and collective identity over the individual. Given names are almost always composed of two Sino-Korean syllables, each mapped to a specific hanja (Chinese character). Parents select hanja with auspicious meanings—such as brightness (明), virtue (德), or beauty (美)—and frequently consult a professional name analyst (jakinyeongsa, 작명사) who evaluates stroke counts, the five elements (ohaeng, 오행), and yin-yang balance. This practice, called saju (사주) or eumyang ohaeng (음양오행), treats the name as a force that shapes the bearer's fortune and character. One of the most distinctive features of Korean naming is the generational name (dollimja, 돌림자). Within a patrilineal clan, all members of the same generation share one syllable of their given name, cycling through a predetermined sequence tied to the five elements. This system allows any two Koreans with the same surname and clan origin (bon-gwan, 본관) to determine their exact generational relationship. Korea's clan system (bon-gwan) links every family name to a specific ancestral seat—a geographic origin such as Gimhae (김해) for the Gimhae Kim clan or Jeonju (전주) for the Jeonju Lee clan. There are roughly 280 surnames in Korea, but over 4,000 distinct clans when bon-gwan is included. Historically, marriage within the same clan was prohibited by law until 2005, underscoring the social importance of these lineage records, which are maintained in comprehensive genealogies called jokbo (족보).
