Johannessen
Origine et histoire
Extended patronymic surname meaning 'son of Johanness' (a fuller form of Johannes), from Hebrew 'Yohanan' meaning 'God is gracious'. Johannessen uses the double -ssen ending, a variant patronymic construction more common in coastal western and northern Norway, particularly in Hordaland, Vestland, and Nordland counties. The double-s form distinguishes it from the simpler Johansen and reflects regional orthographic traditions before standardised Norwegian spelling was established in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It remains among the twenty most common surnames in Norway today.
