Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Kristian', the Scandinavian form of Christian, from the Latin 'Christianus' meaning 'follower of Christ', itself derived from the Greek 'Christos' (anointed one). The name Kristian gained popularity in Scandinavia partly through the many Danish-Norwegian kings named Christian from the fifteenth century onward, which caused the given name to spread widely among the population and thus generate the patronymic Kristiansen in large numbers during the nineteenth century when hereditary surnames became compulsory in Norway.
