The Pan surname descends from Ji Jisheng, a grandson of King Wen of Zhou, who was enfeoffed in the Pan region. The character 潘 depicts water flowing around an enclosure, evoking a river's meandering course. The surname is common in Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, and among overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, where it often appears as Phan or Phoon.
