Shah is a Persian-origin title meaning 'king' or 'emperor', widely adopted as a surname by trading communities in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, as well as by some Muslim families across India. In Gujarat, it is strongly associated with the Jain merchant community (Jain Vaishyas), where it denotes successful traders and businesspeople. The title came to India through Persian and Mughal administrative influence.
