Indian Names

Indian names encompass an extraordinary diversity of traditions, reflecting the subcontinent's linguistic, religious, and regional complexity. India is home to 22 officially recognized languages written in 13 distinct scripts, and naming conventions vary dramatically across regions, religions, castes, and linguistic communities. There is no single "Indian naming system" but rather a constellation of interconnected traditions. In North India, names typically follow the Western-style pattern of given name + family name (surname). The surname often indicates caste (jati), community, or occupation: Sharma (priest/Brahmin), Gupta (merchant/Vaishya), Singh (warrior/Kshatriya, also adopted widely by Sikhs), and Patel (village headman). In South India, the naming system is fundamentally different—many communities use patronymics rather than fixed family surnames. A Tamil name might follow the pattern Initial(father's name) + Given name, with the father's name abbreviated to a single letter. Religious tradition profoundly shapes Indian naming. Hindu names frequently derive from Sanskrit and reference deities (Lakshmi, Krishna, Ganesh), virtues (Dharma, Satya), or cosmic concepts (Akash/sky, Priya/beloved). Muslim Indian names draw from Arabic and Persian (Mohammed, Fatima, Irfan). Sikh names are often gender-neutral, with Singh (lion) appended for males and Kaur (princess) for females. Christian Indian names may combine Western given names with regional surnames. The practice of consulting astrology (jyotish, ज्योतिष) for naming is widespread among Hindus. The child's birth chart (kundali) determines the auspicious first syllable of the name based on the nakshatra (lunar mansion) at the time of birth. The naming ceremony (namkaran, नामकरण) is one of the sixteen samskaras (sacraments) in Hindu tradition, typically performed on the 12th day after birth.
