Jokbo

족보 (族譜)

A comprehensive genealogical record maintained by Korean clans, documenting the lineage, marriages, and generational naming patterns of all clan members across centuries.

The jokbo (족보/族譜) is Korea's traditional genealogical record system, considered one of the most thorough and systematic genealogical traditions in the world. These records trace patrilineal descent from a clan's founding ancestor through every subsequent generation, documenting names, birth and death dates, marriages, official titles, and burial locations. Some jokbo stretch back over 600 years, with the oldest known example being the Munhwa Yu clan record from 1423.

Structure and Contents

A typical jokbo is organized by generation, with each generation assigned a number counting from the founding ancestor. Entries include the individual's full name (including hanja), birthdate, spouse's name and clan, children, and notable achievements or government positions. The jokbo also records the dollimja sequence for each generation, providing a blueprint for naming future descendants. Major clans publish updated editions of their jokbo every 30 to 60 years, a massive undertaking that involves surveying all living clan members across the country and sometimes internationally.

Cultural Significance Today

Historically, inclusion in a prestigious jokbo was a marker of social status, and during the late Joseon Dynasty, there was a widespread practice of commoners purchasing entries in yangban (aristocratic) clan records. Today, while the social prestige of jokbo has diminished, many Koreans still take pride in their clan heritage. Digital jokbo databases have emerged, making it easier for younger generations to explore their ancestry. The jokbo remains particularly relevant during Chuseok (harvest festival) and Seollal (Lunar New Year), when families gather for ancestral rites (jesa) and the genealogical record helps determine proper ritual protocols and seating arrangements.
