Происхождение и история
Anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic 'O Duinn', meaning 'descendant of Donn', where 'Donn' means 'brown' or 'dark-haired', and also connects to the mythological 'Donn', the Irish god of the dead and ancestor of the Gaels, who was said to dwell on the rocky island of Tech Duinn off the southwest coast. The O'Dunns were lords of the Ui Riagain in County Laois, but were displaced from their lands during the Laois-Offaly plantation of the mid-sixteenth century and scattered across Leinster. Dunne remains one of the most characteristic surnames of County Laois and County Offaly.
