Jens was one of the most common given names in medieval Denmark, making Jensen the single most frequent surname in the country. Like the other -sen surnames, it became hereditary under the Danish Name Act of 1828, which required fixed family names. Approximately 260,000 Danes bear this surname, representing about 4.4 percent of the population.
