Nature surname meaning 'linden stream', composed of the Swedish 'lind' (linden tree, lime tree) and 'strom' (stream, current). Like Lindberg, Lindstrom belongs to the large family of Swedish two-element nature surnames that emerged between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, when soldiers and civilians formalised hereditary surnames by combining landscape words. The linden tree was sacred in Swedish folk tradition — village lindens were gathering places for community events, and the tree was associated with fertility and protection in Norse mythology. Lindstrom is common across central Sweden, particularly in Uppland and Vastmanland.
