Происхождение и история

From the Scottish Gaelic 'Mac Dhomhnaill', meaning 'son of Domhnall' — where 'Domhnall' is composed of 'domhan' (world) and 'val' (rule), meaning 'world ruler' or 'ruler of the world'. The personal name Donald was borne by early Irish and Scottish kings, and Clan Donald (Lords of the Isles) was the most powerful clan in the western Highlands and Hebrides from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. At its height, the Lordship of the Isles rivalled the Scottish Crown in power, and the surname's frequency today reflects centuries of clan expansion across Argyll, the Hebrides, and the Highland diaspora worldwide.
