A diminutive form of the given name Pierre (French form of Peter), from the Greek 'Petros' and Aramaic 'Kepha', meaning 'stone' or 'rock'. The '-in' diminutive suffix was common in Old French to form familiar or affectionate versions of names; Perrin was essentially 'little Pierre' before becoming a fixed hereditary surname widespread across Burgundy, Champagne, and the Jura.
