Từ corresponds to the Chinese character 徐 (Xú), meaning 'leisurely' or 'unhurried,' and is associated with the ancient Xu state of the Zhou Dynasty. It is among the top 20 most common surnames in China. The name arrived in Vietnam through waves of Chinese settlement and is found throughout the country, with concentration in areas of historical Chinese-Vietnamese commerce.
