Topographic farm name derived from Old Norse 'dalr' meaning 'valley', the Scandinavian cognate of the English 'dale'. Farms named Dahl were situated in valleys or lower-lying land between hills, a landscape feature common throughout Norway's fjord country and inland mountain regions. The name is found across all of Scandinavia — as Dal in Swedish and Dal or Dahl in Danish — but in Norway it is most concentrated in the Telemark, Agder, and Vestfold regions of southern Norway.
