The Lü surname (呂) traces its origins to Lü Shang (Jiang Ziya), the legendary military strategist and king-maker who helped King Wen and King Wu of Zhou overthrow the Shang Dynasty. His descendants were enfeoffed in the state of Lü in present-day Henan. The character 呂 originally depicted two chambers of a musical instrument, symbolising harmony. The surname is common in Shandong and Fujian provinces.
