The Yang surname originates from the ancient state of Yang, which was a fiefdom granted to Bo Qiao, a son of King Xuan of Zhou, around 800 BC. The character 楊 depicts a poplar tree and is associated with resilience and upward growth. During the Sui Dynasty (581–618 AD), Yang was the imperial surname, lending the clan exceptional prestige.
