Eight Characters / Four Pillars

八字 (bāzì)

A Chinese astrological system based on the year, month, day, and hour of birth, widely used to guide naming decisions and life predictions.

Bāzì (八字), literally meaning 'eight characters,' is a foundational system of Chinese astrology that uses the Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches (地支) corresponding to the year, month, day, and hour of a person's birth to create a unique cosmological profile. Each of the four time units yields a pair of characters — one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch — producing eight characters total, also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理).

Role in Naming

The bazi analysis is often the first step in the traditional Chinese naming process. A fortune-teller or naming specialist decodes the eight characters to determine the balance of the Five Elements (五行) in the child's destiny chart. The day pillar's Heavenly Stem is considered the 'Day Master' (日主), representing the self. By examining whether the Day Master is strong or weak and which elements support or constrain it, the specialist identifies which elemental energies should be strengthened through the name.

Beyond Naming

While naming is one of the most common applications of bazi, the system extends far beyond it. Bazi analysis is used to assess compatibility between prospective marriage partners, to choose auspicious dates for weddings and business ventures, and to provide broad life forecasts regarding career, health, and relationships. The tradition dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) and was systematized during the Song Dynasty. Today, bazi remains one of the most consulted divinatory systems across East Asia, with professional practitioners in every major Chinese community worldwide.
