Lisänimi
lisänimi
A Finnish additional byname or descriptive nickname (lisänimi) historically used to distinguish individuals sharing the same given name within a community, often referring to a physical feature, place of origin, occupation, or personal quality.
A lisänimi (additional name or byname) was an informal descriptive identifier appended to a person's given name in Finnish communities to resolve the ambiguity created by a limited repertoire of common given names. In villages where multiple men might share the name Antti or Juho, a lisänimi — drawn from a physical characteristic, the person's farm or village of origin, an occupation, or a memorable personal trait — served as the primary means of practical identification. Lisänimet appear throughout Finnish parish records, household examination rolls, and tax documents from the 16th century onward.
Types and Examples
Finnish lisänimet drew from several semantic fields. Physical descriptors noted height, build, or distinctive features (Pitkä/tall, Lyhyt/short, Punainen/red, Musta/black). Farm names (talonimet) identified a person by their farm or estate, a practice particularly common in rural Finland where farms had established names: a man from the Mäkinen farm might be called Mäkisen Antti. Occupational bynames noted a trade: Seppä (blacksmith), Räätäli (tailor). Origin names referenced a place of birth or former residence. These lisänimet were often semi-official in local administrative practice even when they lacked formal legal status.
Legacy in Finnish Surnames
The lisänimi tradition contributed directly to the formation of many Finnish hereditary surnames. When the transition from patronymics to fixed sukunimet occurred, families often adopted an existing lisänimi — particularly a farm name (talonimi) — as their permanent hereditary surname. The characteristic Finnish farm-name surnames, which frequently end in -nen (a diminutive suffix also common in place names), trace their origin to this process: a farm called Virtala might produce the family surname Virtanen. The lisänimi thus bridges the gap between the informal, flexible naming of the patronymic era and the fixed, registered sukunimi of modern Finland.
