Nakṣatra

नक्षत्र

One of the 27 lunar mansions in Vedic astrology, each governing specific syllables considered auspicious for naming a child born under that star.

In Vedic astrology (Jyotiṣa), the ecliptic is divided into 27 nakṣatras, each spanning 13°20' of celestial longitude. The nakṣatra occupied by the Moon at the exact time of a child's birth is considered the janma nakṣatra (birth star) and plays a central role in determining the child's name. Each nakṣatra is assigned a set of phonetic syllables, and the child's name is expected to begin with one of these sounds.

The 27 Lunar Mansions

The 27 nakṣatras begin with Aśvinī and end with Revatī, each associated with a presiding deity, a symbolic animal, and specific qualities. Rohiṇī, presided over by Brahmā, is associated with creativity and growth. The nakṣatra system predates the twelve-sign rāśi system and is unique to the Indian astrological tradition, with roots traceable to the Ṛgveda and Atharvaveda.

Practical Naming Application

When parents consult an astrologer for naming guidance, the astrologer first calculates the precise position of the Moon using the pañcāṅga (Vedic almanac). The recommended syllables are then provided to the family. This practice remains widespread across India, even among families who may not otherwise follow astrological guidance closely. Many online nakṣatra calculators and mobile applications have made this tradition accessible to younger generations.
