From the Scottish Gaelic 'Caimbeul', meaning 'crooked mouth' or 'wry-mouthed' — combining 'cam' (crooked, bent) and 'beul' (mouth). The name was originally a nickname for an ancestor with a distinctive facial feature or manner of speech and was later adopted as a hereditary clan name. Clan Campbell, centred on Argyll in the western Highlands, became one of the most powerful and numerous clans in Scotland, which explains the surname's high frequency. Their dominance brought them into frequent conflict with other clans, most infamously in the Massacre of Glencoe (1692), where Campbell soldiers killed MacDonald civilians.
