Haugen
Herkunft & Geschichte
Topographic farm name derived from Old Norse 'haugr' meaning 'mound', 'hill', or 'burial mound', with the definite article suffix '-en', thus 'the mound' or 'the hill'. Farms named Haugen were typically situated on or near a prominent knoll or ancient burial mound — 'hauger' are common landscape features in Norwegian valleys and plains. The name is most frequent in the eastern and central Norwegian counties of Innlandet and Viken, where the gentler topography produced many such mound-like features. Norwegian emigrants carried Haugen to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Dakotas.
