Derived from the Latin personal name Laurentius, meaning 'man from Laurentum' (a city near Rome), or alternatively associated with 'laurus' (laurel), symbolizing honor and victory. The name was spread by veneration of Saint Lawrence, the 3rd-century Roman deacon and martyr, across medieval France.
