Das comes from the Sanskrit 'dāsa', meaning 'servant' or 'devotee of God'. It is widely used across West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, predominantly among communities of various castes including scheduled castes who historically adopted the term to signify devotion to the divine. The name is common among followers of Vaishnavism and was embraced by the Bhakti movement saints.
