The He surname originates from the royal Han surname Liu (劉), adopted by Han prince Liu He's descendants after the fall of the Western Han. An older origin traces the surname to an official of the state of Chen named He Shuying who was granted the He surname by his ruler. The name is common across southern China, Hong Kong, and Macau, where it often appears as Ho.
