Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Lars', the Scandinavian form of Lawrence, from the Latin Laurentius, meaning 'man from Laurentum' or associated with 'laurus' (laurel), symbolising honour and victory. Lars became widespread in Denmark through the veneration of Saint Lawrence, the 3rd-century Roman deacon and martyr, and its use was reinforced by Lutheran baptismal tradition.
