Welsh and English patronymic surname derived from the given name Lewis, the English and Welsh form of the Old High German 'Chlodovech' or 'Ludwig', composed of 'hlod' (fame) and 'wig' (warrior) — meaning 'famous warrior'. In Wales it also served as an anglicisation of the native 'Llewelyn'.
