Thakur is a feudal title of Sanskrit origin ('thakkura'), roughly meaning 'lord', 'master', or 'deity'. It was conferred on Rajput landlords, village headmen, and minor chieftains across North and Central India. The surname is prevalent in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. It carries strong feudal connotations of land ownership and is associated with the dominant landowning Rajput class in rural India.
