Patronymic surname meaning 'son of Iver', from the Old Norse 'Ivarr', composed of 'ir' (yew tree) and 'arr' (warrior, eagle) — thus 'yew warrior' or more poetically 'archer' (since yew wood was the traditional material for longbows). Iver or Ivar was a popular Viking Age name borne by several Norse kings and chieftains, including Ivar the Boneless, one of the leaders of the Great Heathen Army that invaded England in 865. Iversen is most common in the coastal counties of Trondheim, More og Romsdal, and along the Norwegian west coast.
