Salo
الأصل والتاريخ
The bare, unsuffixed form of 'salo', meaning a vast, primeval forest or wilderness, adopted directly as a surname without the '-nen' diminutive. Like Laine and Niemi, Salo represents the older, shorter Finnish surname type that simply took a landscape word as a family name without grammatical modification. This form is particularly common in western Finland — Ostrobothnia, Pirkanmaa, and the Turku region — where both a suffixless naming tradition and the word 'salo' as a place-name element are prevalent. The city of Salo in southwestern Finland shares this etymological root.
